January 18, 2010: MLK Day = Day Off

Today is Martin Luther King Day, federal holiday. No mail, no Wall Street Journal.

Pretty quiet today. It was supposed to get into the forties today. Doesn’t look like it is going to happen. Hiking this afternoon with Pat. Going to do the bike path since its probably still a little icy at the Narrows.

Worked on the guitar and piano this morning. Getting better, but improvement seems slow. Good thing there is no deadline, just for fun. Fingers are still sore.

Bean soup is on the stove. Had a lot of ham, this might be ham soup with beans! Smells good.

Good walk with Pat, but the temperature never got into the forties like the predicted, low thirties at best.

January 17, 2010: Rainy Day

When to the grocery after church. Dropped the eggs, guess I will be making some scrambled eggs. Bought some ham so I can make Judy some more ham salad.

The rain was supposed to stop by noon, no such luck. I wanted to take a hike, but it might not be in the cards today. I should exercise, but not feeling it for the exercise bike.

Worked on the guitar and piano. Working through the course on the guitar. Having trouble getting my fingers spaced so I can hit the right notes. I assume that will work itself out. On the piano I worked on When the Saints Go Marching In, got the melody down.

Put some beans on to soak, ben soup and cornbread for dinner tomorrow.

January 16, 2010: UD Loses in Cincy… Again

Tough day for UD at Xavier. They only loose by four and played pretty well, but could not hit free throws and Xavier almost hit every one of theirs. UD hits their free throws and who knows. Twenty-five loses in a row versus Xavier in Cincy.

Went hiking with Greg this morning. Everything was a little icy with the big melt that is going on. Kind of gray, but the temperature was in the mid thirties already this morning and heading up. Got a pretty good sweat going.

Worked on the guitar for a good part of the afternoon. I have been working on some picking exercises. Sounding all right.

Just a slow day not much going on. Didn’t mind at all.

January 15, 2010: Gray Hair?

Warming up, a little gray, the car thermometer was up to 44 degrees. The snow is going away. Tomorrow is supposed to be a little warmer yet and rain on Sunday, The Snow will be gone.

Got a new drivers license. The lady put down my hair as gray. Well I guess its official, at least by the State of Ohio. One good thing is I passed the eye test. No endorsement to wear glasses. Not that I would want to drive without glasses. Don’t like the way the world looks, not crisp enough. The picture on the license makes it look like I am getting goosed.

Had some fun with the gray hair on my license. I acted like I couldn’t tell I had gray hair and asked the people in the office if my hair was really gray. They had a good time at my expense. I made fun of Ted asking him what they put on his license since he has no hair.

Terry Futrell was telling us about his playing days at Defiance College. They didn’t treat black athletes very well. Talked about the one at home three on the road. This means that there could be no more than one black player on the court at a time on their own home floor. On the road there could be up to three black players on the floor at a time. Terry was the team MVP and took them deep into the Championships, but was not athlete of the year for the school another, white, basketball player got the award.

Worked on the guitar some more. Saw a video on finger picking patterns and was giving them a try. Really need to know what chords to play while you pick. But, I think I can do this.

Looks like there might be some movement on the dulcimer. They changed the wording on the website marginally. I will take this as a good sign.

Had a taste for pancakes, made them for dinner tonight. They did hit the spot.

January 14, 2010: Hair Cut Day

Another nice day, its supposed to be almost forty today. I don’t know if it got their, but it was pretty nice. If there had not been any snow on the ground, could have been tennis weather.

Exciting day I got my hair cut. The guys at the barber shop are funny in that they ask you how you want your hair cut, but it comes out virtually the same regardless of what you say. It’s good they cut my hair in a way I approve.

Finished getting the Athletic Department on Facebook. We will see how this goes.

Worked on the guitar when I got home. Found some additional videos that might help me become more proficient. At least my fingers are feeling better. Really need to get my little finger stronger.

Still haven’t heard from the dulcimer people. Hope they get their shipment soon. Would like to start on it. If I don’t hear from them soon I might call them and see if I can make deal on one of the nicer ones.
